In the 70s TV-show Kung Fu, snatching a pebble from the “learned one’s” hand was a demonstration of competence and a sign that the learner was ready to go and take on the world. I love that analogy, but it has limitations within the context of massaging pain-free.

One, I’m not the master. I’m simply a massage therapist who experimented until he found a way to massage pain-free. Two, there is no one path to massaging pain free. Why? Because massage therapists come in different body types, have different massage styles and have to work around different injuries/conditions. And, three, there is no single moment that will define you as a pain-free massage therapist. As you experiment and put the time in practicing the techniques/strategies in this book, you’ll begin to notice that you’re in less pain and/or in shorter durations of pain–and eventually your body will just stop hurting. So, there’s no snatching. It almost as if the pebble just appears in your hand–but only after lots of work.
